When it comes to marketing, many Raleigh small businesses are at a slight disadvantage.

Marketing budgets are little to non-existent, and the idea of hiring one or two employees to perform in-house marketing is wishful thinking. The end result is that most Raleigh small business owners get stuck pulling 12-hour days or more as they run the business in the daytime and work on their marketing in the evening hours. Regardless of your situation, we want to share five tips that can help boost your marketing efforts while laying the groundwork for future marketing endeavors.

Add a Blog to Your Website

Blogging is a powerful form of content marketing that will pay off significantly as the months and years go by. Your blog posts will promote your products, services, and expertise and have a chance at ranking for desirable keywords in the organic search results.  If you write 2-4 blog posts every month, you should start to notice increased traffic to your website and improved brand recognition over time. You can also repurpose the content you write in the form of emails blasts, social media posts, and infographics. This can help cut down the time it takes to write an email or social media post.

Join Local Business Groups

Joining your local Chamber of Commerce (along with any associated groups) is a great way to grow your network. You might make some excellent connections that will add value to your business. It's also a way to give back to your community—and residents are often more than happy to patronize local businesses. You can also take nighttime business classes at the local community college or civic centers, such as QuickBooks and other business software. Many small business owners like yourself need a quick refresher on the content they learned back in high school accounting classes.

Pass Out Business Cards

Custom QR codesYes, business cards are "still a thing," and they're just as powerful as they were in the pre-internet days. Be sure to put the URL of your company website, email address, and social media handles somewhere prominent on the card's design. A QR Code or pURL can send the business card recipient to a specific landing page that will help them move through your marketing funnel.  Be sure to give careful consideration to the design and cardstock of your new business cards. Get creative. You can choose from a wide range of sizes, shapes, paper stock, inks, and finishes that will allow your card to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Start Building Your Email List

Set up a dedicated landing page on your website with a form for visitors to fill out their contact information, including their email address. As time goes by, you'll start to create the beginnings of your email marketing list that you can send out emails to regularly. If you perform content marketing, you can send out a quick email blast to your list informing them of the latest blog post that might perk their interests or solve their pain points. Be sure to purge your email list every now and then—remove any bad ones and make sure that everyone "opts-in" to keep in compliance with the laws regarding email marketing.

Consider Your Branding

The branding of your small business is especially important. It sets you apart from the rest of the pack and allows your customers to make a more personal connection. If you think your branding is off or you'd like a second opinion, reach out to AlphaGraphics of Raleigh, and one of our branding experts will sit down and work with you to create the ideal branding that will resonate well with your audience.

Every Door Direct Mail

While traditional direct mail campaigns can cost quite a bit of money, you can get far greater bang-for-your-buck with Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) from the U.S. Post Office.  The great thing about EDDM is that you don't need a list, to begin with—simply select a geographical area on a map, and the Post Office will deliver your mails to every single residence or business in the area.
