5 Great Ideas for a Sidewalk Sign

A-frames, sandwich signs, or sidewalk signs—no matter what you call them, they’re a highly visible and cost-effective way of advertising your business or event.

Sidewalk signs are designed to attract maximum attention while taking up as little space as possible. Sidewalk signs are the perfect choice when you need a lightweight, yet highly visible sign, capable of standing up to anything mother nature throws at it. Sandwich signs aren’t only just for cafés and restaurants—many other brick and mortar businesses can take advantage of the benefits that they offer. Here are four different ways where it makes good sense to use a sidewalk sign instead of a more expensive traditional sign:

Residential Street Signs

Do you live on a residential street where cars routinely drive over the speed limit? An A-frame sign is perfect for reminding them to slow down as there are children at play. A silhouette of a child at play with the words: “SLOW DOWN—CHILDREN AT PLAY” can help prevent the unthinkable.  You can have the borders and other areas of the sign printed up in a shiny metallic material, which will easily catch the sunlight and cause drivers to take instant notice of the flash of light. Some people will go one step further and add colorful streamers to the boards that will catch in the wind—which will really get the attention of the drivers.

Sidewalk Sales

Sidewalk SignSidewalk signs work because they force pedestrians to notice them as they physically move out of the way when walking by. When designing the sign, be sure to include directions if it’s going to reside anywhere but outside of the front of your business.  If the area your business resides in is undergoing construction, they’re a useful way to let people know that you’re still open for business. They can even take the place of a large and costly 3D architectural sign.

Event Signs

Trade shows, county fairs, and even Farmer’s Markets can all benefit from roadside signage. A sandwich sign can direct car traffic where to park or tell pedestrians how to get to the event. You can have them constructed out of high-visibility materials, which makes them easier to spot and read. Reflective decals will help keep the signs visible in low-light conditions or the evening hours.  Vendors who sell at the local swap meet also use A-Frame signs to let people know the way to their booths. At these types of events, there are often five or more vendors who sell very similar products, and a sidewalk sign is perfect for capturing the attention of anyone who’s walking by.

A-Frame Sign Benefits

A-Frame sides are dual-sided. No matter what direction someone is walking, if it’s in or near their path, they will spot and read it. Their unique construction allows you to fill them with sand or water, thereby preventing a massive gust of wind—or errant pedestrian—from knocking them over. You can choose from a wide range of durable materials, such as PVC, plastic, corrugated plastic (Coroplast), or even metal (steel). Some businesses will opt to have them constructed out of a chalkboard or blackboard material, which allows them to change the message as they see fit. Others will opt for a magnetic board, which will enable them to easily add colorful designs and text without having to draw them. Most importantly, when compared to traditional signage, A-Frame signs are affordable and will last for many years if you take care of them properly. When it comes time to store them, fold them flat, and they’ll fit in any closet or storeroom.
