Do's and Don'ts of Postcard Design

Traditional? Sure. Boring? Never! Postcards are one of the most versatile, low-cost, and easy to work with marketing tools.  Whether you're promoting a sale, product, or simply your brand, custom postcards deliver!  From attracting new customers at a trade show to engaging existing customers via a mailing, how you design your postcard speaks volumes in terms of the results you will see.  Here are some do’s and don'ts from our Charlotte graphic design team that will make your postcard stand out from the rest and get you noticed.

Do Keep It Simple & Direct

Postcards pack a big punch on a small amount of space!  Recognize that time is valuable. Keep your message simple and concise by highlighting critical information. Use a clearly articulated message that excites and engages your audience and a clear call to action to get more information or make a purchase.

Don’t Forget Your Logo & Branding

Nothing boosts brand awareness more than boldly placing your logo and branding front and center.  Always follow your brand standards and boldly feature your logo.  This does three things.  First, it enhances your first impression. Secondly, it conveys trust, especially if they are a repeat customer. And lastly, it helps your business stand out from your competitors. (After all, you don’t want customers getting the impression that the postcard came from your competitor!) Don’t have brand standards? Contact our Charlotte, NC graphic design team, we can help!

Do Include Eye-Catching Imagery

People are visual.  Take advantage of that by including eye-catching imagery that demand’s your audience’s attention. Our best advice? Think creatively or out of the box. Making someone do a double-take is a great way to get noticed. After all, they can’t click a postcard away, so why not leave an image they won’t forget!

Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Personalization

According to recent statistics, 80% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences.   Postcards provide the perfect opportunity for this by designing your postcard with their name in big, bold lettering.  This personalized touch makes them feel the content is tailored to them and making more likely to read your message and respond.

Do Add a Call to Action

Including a call to action converts prospects and leads to increased sales.  By providing a tracking source such as a QR code or a personalized URL link in your postcard design, you create a sense of urgency about what they need to do next and a means to measure results!

Don’t Ignore The Back

Yes, simple is better, and the front of your postcard is the main attraction.  To keep it that way, use the back of your postcard for information such as your website, location map or directions, and any other necessary content that would clutter the front.
