Size Definitely Matters

With endless digital resources at your fingertips on the internet, the most common issues faced when printing a piece are low resolution and the file size. When submitting files to be printed, size definitely matters. Understanding issues with resolution and file size are important to ensure a quality print product. There are several factors that come into play when choosing elements for a print piece and exporting it piece to be printed. Let’s start with the basics. What is a pixel? A pixel is the smallest unit of an image or graphic. Pixels combine like dots to create the picture you see. Fewer pixels mean smaller file size and less image detail. An image becomes “pixelated” (looks like a bunch of tiny boxes) or blurry when it has been scaled up beyond the ability of the dots to connect to create a clear image. What about resolution? Resolution is the number of pixels contained in an image or graphic. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer the image will print. Image resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Most high-resolution files or images are saved at 300 dpi. What about the size again? Just having an image with the right pixels and resolution isn't enough. Your file needs to be the exact size you want it to be otherwise, the quality and clarity will suffer. This rule applies to overall print size as well. If you want to print an 8"x10", the artwork file needs to be 8"x10". When in doubt  — go big! While larger files are not web friendly, they work best for printing. The only downfall to having larger files is delivery (most emails will only send attachments that are 10MB or smaller). Fortunately, we have an easy to use “Send A File” service on our website for you to send your files easily. Another option is to bring your files in on a flash drive.   As your partner, AlphaGraphics North Liberty is proud to assist with your printing needs large OR small.
