How to Package Adobe Files for Print
When using the Adobe Creative Suite, sending files for print can quickly become complicated. Many frustrated customers are left wondering how to package Adobe files for Print. However, with a simple trick, you can keep the process simple and efficient for everyone involved. Both Adobe InDesign and Illustrator have a function called “Package.” This useful tool bundles your design, making it easy to send your files.
The
printing process gets complicated when customers are not informed that a file that uses images and fonts is not self-contained. The images and fonts used in InDesign and Illustrator are actually housed on another location on your desktop. When you send these files to be printed, InDesign or Illustrator – and, therefore, your printer – doesn’t have access to the files housed on your computer.
By packaging your files, you create a separate folder on your desktop. This neatly stores (or packages) all the images and font files within your design. Once packaged, your file now contains all the elements your printer will need to properly print your design.
Let’s dive into the process.
To start, open your design in InDesign or Illustrator. Select Files Package. You will see a dialog box, listing the files that are going to be packaged. It’s a good idea to check through the summary and make sure each file is included. Once you’ve confirmed the inclusion of all your files, select “Package.”
Once you click “Continue,” another dialog box will appear, labeled “Package Publication.” You can now choose a place on your computer to save the folder with all of your design information. Remember, this contains not only your complete design but the images and fonts you used as well. Select a location to save the print-ready folder and click “Package.”
This will initiate the process. However, if any warning messages appear noting missing files or licensing registrations, your file will not be packaged completely. Return to the original file and relink or replace any missing files or restricted fonts. This will resolve any issues that would hinder the packaging process.
Once your file is packaged, it’s usually easiest to share via email or asset exchange program. Compress the file to a ZIP file by right-clicking the folder (or command-click for Mac users) and select “Compress File.” This will create a ZIP file that can be easily attached or uploaded to an email or asset sharing platform.
