Choosing paper can be one of the most exciting steps in the printing process. With varieties of color, thicknesses, coating, and surface textures, the choices for a project's paper can be especially unique. Below we feature three recent projects with three different papers. Each paper created the ideal solution for the job.
Felt PaperAs the name suggests, felt paper has a velvety texture, with a creamy uncoated (matte) finish. The Holiday Cards for Birmingham Design House is a gorgeous paper that has an artisan paper feel and rendered beautifully for their hand drawn cover. This paper has a thickness similar to watercolor paper, rendering perfect for a higher quality folded card.
Linen PaperThe Linen paper for The Pelham Way cards at Pelham City Schools has a silky, slightly textured finish with a low gloss subtle sheen to enhance contrast with the colors used. Papers with statin or gloss coatings enhance the hues and contrast of rich colors in graphics and photographs. As seen in the close-up below, linen paper has a canvas cloth like texture (or you could say similar to a linen fabric).
Wood GrainThe wood grain paper that we chose for the cover our 2023 Holiday Look Book adds appropriate texture to the trees. This paper adds a very organic quality to the whimsy style of the graphics. The wood grain mimics the pattern of tree bark.
Choosing a textured paper is the special added touch to enhance the beauty, feel, and experience that only print can bring. Specialty papers come in a variety of surface finishes with sheens ranging from uncoated to photo quality gloss. Come feel these papers and discuss options for your next print job.
